Bracket Projection – February 13

Here’s what we learned from the Committee’s release of the Top 16 teams:

*They are correctly assessing Gonzaga’s resume, as the fourth #1 seed.

Gary Parrish from CBS Sports seems to be taking it personally that people are criticizing Gonzaga, calling anyone who criticizes them “stupid and stubborn.”

Gary, most of us questioning Duke West are not saying that they are a bad team, or couldn’t find their way to Phoenix.  It’s called correctly assessing their resume.  If you want to point to those Arizona and Florida wins, when both teams were not nearly what they are now, go ahead.  But stop calling people stupid.  It’s a bad look.

Plus, St. Mary’s had every chance in the world to make that game close and choked.

*They really don’t value the Big 14

Looking into it more, they’re probably right.  Wisconsin is 22-4, and leading the conference.  But look at their resume:  2 Top 50 wins, 117th SOS, 256th non-conference SOS.  I’d suspect Purdue is actually the highest rated team on the board from the conference.

*SOS is a really big deal

Of the top 16, only WVU (99), Gonzaga (127) and UCLA (124) have a SOS lower than 35.

The teams that didn’t make it who you could argue should be in the top 16:  Wisconsin (117), Cincinnati (77), Purdue (40).  So why were WVU and UCLA in instead?  Look at the best three wins of each team.

  • WVU – at UVa, Baylor, Kansas
  • UCLA – at UK, Oregon, Michigan
  • Wisconsin – Tennessee, at Minnesota, Syracuse
  • Cincinnati – SMU, Xavier, at Iowa State

Of course, Wisconsin and Cincinnati losing on Sunday made the committee look pretty darn good.
