Short on time this week, but it’s another shit sundae with a pretty good cherry on top. Hence, no creative title to this blog. That’s what this slate deserves. The Big 12/SEC challenge has exactly ZERO matchups between Top 25 teams. Well done, schedulers.
Last Week: Mike 1-3 / Nate 4-3
Season: Mike 5-12-1 / Nate 13-12-1
Beer Bets: Nate +3
#2 Virginia (19-1) @ #4 Duke (18-2), 1 p.m., CBS
Line: Dook -4.5
Reason to Watch: This is as good as it gets today in the College Basketball world. Take time from the Netflix binge to watch this.
Very interested to see how Virginia handles the road environment. They have played only five road games and lost their toughest test at West Virginia.
Mike: Virginia is an excellent team. Virginia basketball is unwatchable. Both of these things are true. As much as I respect how Virginia wins games I loathe the way they do it. I’ll take Dook -4.5, but I’m not all that confident about it. Virginia is the real deal, but I bet they don’t make the Elite 8. Dook will.
Nate: How will the Duke freshmen handle the complicated Virginia pack-line defense? No team has hung more than 70 on the Cavs all year. This may be a reach, but I think the Cavs are for real. UVA +4.5 and think about taking the moneyline.
#12 Oklahoma (15-4) @ Alabama (13-7), 1:15 p.m., ESPN
Line: OU -1.5
Reason to Watch: Trae Young took THIRTY less shots in the win over Kansas on Tuesday than he did last Saturday at Okie State. The happy medium is likely somewhere in the middle.
Oh, and Collin Sexton is good too.
Mike: This one is easy. OU -1.5. I fully expect OU to win this one by 20.
Nate: Trae Young > Collin Sexton. OU -1.5.
Dayton (10-10) @ Saint Louis (10-11), 3 p.m., CBSSN
Line: SLU -2.5
Reason to Watch: Because it’s the Cup. The Arch-Baron Cup. The Flyers have won 7 in a row in this series mainly because the Billikens (what the hell is a Billiken anyway?) have been just atrocious for the past 5 years. Also, until this year, Dayton was good. There’s a lot of talent on this Dayton squad. Greek Freak 2.0, Crutcher, Cunningham, Landers, and Davis (not Darrell) have me looking forward to the future. But the present isn’t great. On talent alone, Dayton should win this one outright. Will they? Who knows. This team is impossible to figure out.
Mike: Flyers + 2.5. SLU is bad. Dayton is, too, but slightly less so.
Nate: I’d like to think Dayton is the better team here, but which team shows up? The one who beat VCU by 27, or the one that lost to Stupid Flapping Hawk by 16. I have no earthly idea.
Miami (15-4) @ Florida State (15-5), 3 p.m., ACC Network
Line: FSU -5
Reason to Watch: These two teams are identical. Loads of talent, and I think, underrated. Miami won the first one at home by 6.
Mike: I’m not touching this one. I don’t like any of the teams in America’s Wang. Pick them all to get bounced early.
Nate: This one goes to the wire, so give me the points. Canes +5
Kentucky (15-5) @ #7 West Virginia (16-4), 6 p.m., ESPN
Line: Mountaineers -9
Reason to Watch: So Bob Huggins has a Fish Fry annually to raise money for cancer research. I’m a fan of that.
But, is there anything more West Virginia than a Fish Fry Fundraiser??? Absolutely love it.
Mike: West Virginia is really good. I’m not sure whether Kentucky can get it together, but I’m guessing that if they do, it won’t be today. Pittsnoggles -9 it is.
Nate: That’s a ton of points, but WVU is pretty damn good at home. I’m still taking the Cats +9 and continuing my trend of picking road teams.
Virginia Tech (14-6) @ Notre Dame (13-7), 7 p.m., ESPN2
Line: ND -3.5
Reason to Watch: I really don’t know. Bonz, Farrell and Harvey are all out. Vegas is drunk with this spread.
Mike: Man, ND is struggling. Every game they win at this point is a bonus. I don’t see them getting this one as short handed as they are, though.
Nate: This is my prediction for the game….
If it’s anything like the last five games, the pain will be in my eyeballs. Who is going to score for the Irish? Head says to take VT and the points, but I think I have to go with Vegas here and hope for the best. Irish -3.5.
