Bracket Update – March 3

Updates are going to come fast and furious now that we’ve hit March.  Right now, I see 21 teams fighting for 10 spots…and those teams are not separated by much.

Before we get to the bracket, time for some more blind resumes.

Blind Resume #1

#1 #2 #3 #4
Record 19-11 19-11 17-12 21-12
RPI 39 41 62 67

SOS 25 22 25 77
NSOS 113 70 125 255
Q1 3-8 3-9 4-7 3-7
Q1/Q2 7-10 5-11 7-11 5-9
AQ1/Q2 2-8 4-6 5-5 2-7
Q3/Q4 Ls 1 0 1 3

This exercise is to show you how one team that hasn’t been widely considered to be on the bubble needs to be very careful, while another still has some work to do.

Team 1 – Butler
Team 2 – Louisville
Team 3 – Marquette
Team 4 – Penn State

Butler’s loss at St. John’s puts them in a precarious spot, especially because they have really struggled on the road.  Regarding Penn State, beating Purdue would give them a shot…but the resume is pretty bad.  Especially the non-conference SOS and the bad losses.

Oh and that Louisville loss on Thursday…WOW.  Two bonehead plays in the final seconds, or else they’d be in the field right now.

Blind Resume #2

Team 1 – MTSU
Team 2 – Rhode Island

Rhode Island had a complete disaster of a week.  First, they lost by 30, at home, to Stupid Flapping Hawk.  Then, they lost at Davidson.  Once thought of as potentially a #4 seed, URI is now likely in the 8-10 range.  MTSU’s resume is slightly better, and I still think that non-conference SOS is going to get them in if they lose in the Conference USA tournament.

How do you lose by 30, at home, to Stupid Flapping Hawk?

Team 1 – Mississippi State
Team 2 – Nebraska

It’s over Nebraska fans.  I would be stunned if they got a bid, even if the rest of the bubble disappoints during Conference Tournament week.  Mississippi State’s in trouble too, as they blew an opportunity at home and got pounded by Tennessee.

Bracket

Last Four In:  Alabama, Providence, Texas, Washington

*Note: St. Mary’s would be in this group, but I picked them to win the WCC title

Others in the Running:  Louisville, Marquette, UCLA, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Mississippi State, Penn State, Utah, Nebraska, Georgia, LSU

Reminder, for the smaller conferences, I go by my conference tournament predictions (which are already bad).  For example, while Charleston won the CAA regular season, I picked Bill & Mary to win, so I have them in.
